Live Interactive TV Debuts byEndemol
Turner Broadcasting System said Wednesday it plans to air a live, audience-participation game show that blends elements of reality TV, interactivity, and the standard game show.
The show, Midnight Money Madness, will start its run on August 28. It will give viewers a chance to win cash by text-messaging, calling, or logging on to the Internet.
The games will be hosted by two still-to-be-named comics, and will include humorous man-on-the-street cut-ins.
Midnight Money Madness is being produced by Endemol, a Netherlands-based entertainment company that has produced similar shows in 22 other countries.
Endemol produced the hit TV show Deal or No Deal, which runs a contest on each show for viewers to submit a guess that could win them cash prizes.
No Studio Audience
Midnight will run for two hours each night, Monday through Thursday.
There will be two live presentations, one for the East Coast and another for the West Coast, and each episode will present six to eight games.
There will be no in-studio audience or contestants.
Contestants must register their phone numbers and they may be contacted and given a chance to play live.
Midnight is the latest in a new genre of interactive TV shows that take advantage of improvements in telecommunications technology to accommodate the participatory demands of younger audiences.
The wide availability of broadband services in much of the developed and developing worlds is transforming telecommunications into a two-way street.
The TV set-top box has become more than just a means of converting TV signals. It too has become a two-way communications device allowing viewers to become active participants on TV.
