Music Startup Seeks Talent

Firm teams with Epic, Mercury, EMI record labels and Clear Channel to find online idols.

A startup has opened an online talent search to hunt for the next musical sensation who hasn’t won any American Idol competitions yet.

Music Nation, a Brooklyn, New York-based startup, has teamed up with three big record labels—Epic Records, Mercury Records, and Typhoon/EMI—and Clear Channel Radio to launch the competition.

Starting January 1, bands and musicians ages 13 and older will be able to submit music videos to the online site, along with an entrance fee of $25. The videos can be in one of three categories: rock, pop, or urban. Music fans online, as well as a panel of judges will vote on the entries.

Winners in each of the three categories will be selected and will receive recording contracts with Epic Records, a $100,000 video shoot, and a showcase on Clear Channel Radio’s Stripped in-studio performance series.

The effort capitalizes on the interest in user-generated videos on sites like YouTube, coupled with the blockbuster ratings of Fox’s American Idol TV series.
