Simplifying Mobile Browsing
Fresh Fish: mDog launches service that makes mobile
One of the pet peeves for users of web-enabled mobile devices is the complexity of browsing some of their favorite web sites.
The biggest complaints are long download times and cumbersome browsing, but a Chicago-based startup is trying to change all that. mDog launched its service Tuesday, which allows users to browse certain popular web sites as easily as they can on home computers.
mDog’s technology dynamically renders web sites in a format that is most appropriate for mobile browsing, said Keith Gerard, president of mDog.com.
Currently, the number of “mDogged” sites, as Mr. Gerard likes to call them, are limited to about 150, most of which are news, sports, entertainment, business, or weather sites. But by the end of the year, he hopes to have about 1,000 web sites customized for mobile browsing.
Users will not have to download or buy any software on their devices. They just go to mDog.com, and the site will take them to the popular sites they are used to browsing in a format that is easier to navigate.
The pages they view through mDog will have graphics and photos based on their relevance to the content. Hence, loading the pages will be faster, as there will be fewer images to download.
“Just typing mDog enables the top Internet web sites to come alive and it renders your mobile device more useful to you,” Mr. Gerard said.
mDog can run on any web-enabled mobile device, including the RIM BlackBerry, Palm Treo, and Motorola Q, and it is free for everyone to use.
