Napster Debuts Japan Service
The online music subscription service rolls out across the land of the rising sun.
Napster premiered its digital music subscription service Tuesday in Japan in partnership with Tower Records Japan.
Napster said the service was the first digital music subscription service available in Japan. Previously Japanese consumers have needed to pay for each album and track they have downloaded.
The Los Angeles-based company had announced its plans to launch the service back in August.
The service includes nearly 2 million music tracks from both major record labels and independent music companies, along with a library of Japanese content. Napster Japan includes community features, personalized recommendations, playlists, and a set of commercial-free “radio” stations.
Napster is giving customers a choice of two subscription offers. A basic subscription costs ¥1,280 ($10.99) per month.
The premium Napster To Go subscription sells for ¥1,980 ($16.99) per month and lets customers transfer music to a variety of portable devices, including MP3 players from Creative Technology, iRiver, JVC, and Toshiba, along with NTT DoCoMo’s F902iS mobile phone.
NTT DoCoMo plans to make many of its future cell phones compatible with the service. Napster said other compatible devices would be hitting the market in Japan in the months ahead.
