YouTube Rocks Out With Chop Shop

YouTube said it plans to launch a contest for undiscoved musicians and bands to potentially achieve stardom.

Starting on Oct. 2, any unsigned music artist can submit a video of their performance to YouTube, where the site's users will then vote on their favorite performer. Upon conclusion of the contest on Oct. 18, a produced from the record company Chop Shop Music Supervision will chose a handful of winners from the top vote getters. The top four winners will perform on Good Morning American on Nov. 29.

Cingular Wireless has signed on as the premier sponsor of the program, though YouTube has yet to release details on what that sponsorship entails. In addition to the contest, YouTube said it plans to launch its first monthly newsletter, News From the Underground, aimed at music fans seeking up and coming artists and performers.
