Telefonica O2 launches IP TV pilot

Employees of Telefonica O2 Czech Republic will get to participate in the telco's IP TV pilot, receiving around 30 programs in Czech and Slovak along with news, documentaries, children's channels and 250 videos for download on demand.

Telefonica O2 Czech Republic has launched a trial of internet protocol television (IP TV) for its employees as a way of testing sales channels for the services.

The IP TV service will roll out to the general public via fixed telephone lines in the third quarter of 2006. The programming will be transferred in the MPEG4 format, using half a data stream. This media allows data to stream at around 2.8 Mbps speed, compared to 4-5 Mbps for digital broadcasting.

Telefonica O2 Czech Republic will soon launch its ADSL 2+ network, which will more than double the current speed of fixed telephone lines for IP TV service.
