eBay announces fixed-price shopping website
The online auction company eBay is planning a new e-commerce website that will let businesses sell new goods at a fixed price.
Although more than a third of goods sold on eBay exchange hands for a fixed price, the site is best known for hosting auctions of new and second-hand goods ranging from yachts to uneaten Christmas dinners.
The new site, eBay Express, will only list new items for sale by businesses rather than private individuals. Sellers will have to sign up to a code of practice committing them to dispatch goods within three days of receiving payment and to accept goods returned within seven days.
Azita Qadri, eBay’s small business manager, said that the site would allow retailers of all sizes to reach eBay’s audience of 15 million users. "A small player will be able to take on a larger player on an equal footing," she said.
She said that eBay Express will provide small and medium-sized companies with a quick and easy way to establish an online presence.
The site, due for launch in the UK in October, allows customers to buy goods from multiple retailers in a single transaction, unlike the existing eBay site, on which each purchase is handled separately.
Sellers using eBay Express will have to register as businesses, but will pay the same fees that are charged by the existing site. The commission varies according to the value of goods sold.
An American version of eBay Express is already live, but buyers outside the US cannot use it. The company said it could not yet release usage figures for the US site.
